If you’re a drum geek like I am AND you have closely studied the history of most of the recorded music that has come out of Los Angeles, CA over the past 3+ decades, then you will know exactly who Ross “The Drum Doctor” Garfield is. From Frank Sinatra to Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson to Metallica, master drum craftsman and technician, Ross Garfield, is responsible for some of the world’s most iconic drum sounds. He has worked with just about everyone of my favorite session drummers including Josh Freese, Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Jordan, and Abe Laboriel, Jr. On my Musical Bucket List, there is one line item that reads: “Play drums on a top-shelf recording project in LA, CA that enlists services & equipment of The Drum Doctor.”
This video is one that I came across this morning. It is a great little, six minute-long vignette that shares his story and puts a spotlight on a guy who is responsible for the way that drums sound on modern day recordings.
